![]() What is Orf?
Orf (contagious ecthyma or scabby mouth) is a highly contagious viral disease which is
transmitted to humans by direct animal contact. Open cuts on wrists or forearms, caused by
dragging the animal by the hooves is another inlet for the Orf virus.
Orf is very common among shepherds, veterinary surgeons, and farmers' wives who bottle-feed young lambs, as
well as in abattoirs, butchers and meat porters who handle infected carcasses. The Orf virus is very resilient and live
virus has been found in dried scabs up to twelve years after they have been shed.
How Does Orf Effect Humans?
Orf appears as a solitary lesion or as a few lesions on the fingers, hands, or forearms. It has even been reported on the
face. The lesion starts as a small, firm, red-to-blue papule that grows to form a flat-topped pustule. The pustule may
have a crust in its centre.
The fully developed lesion is typically 2-3 cm in diameter, but it may
reach 5 cm. It is often sore and may bleed. There may be a fever which
can last several days.
Persistent symptoms which can follow the appearance of the sores include aching limbs, extreme fatigue
and muscle weakness. Chronic cases of Orf in humans have been widely reported and can last for over a
year.
How does Hydra ZORF Skin Treatment Soap Help Prevent Orf
ZORF contains active biocides which during the hand washing process, penetrates and destroys the Orf virus on
contact. ZORF has a residual action. This means that ZORF will continue working up to three hours after use,
leaving an invisible antibacterial barrier stopping infection and cross infection. Regular use increases this protection.
Antiseptic Properties Helps Heal Skin
Wide spectrum antiseptic properties accelerate the healing of Orf damaged skin and other skin related diseases, cuts
and grazes. Continued use of ZORF will prevent re-infection and will help skin regain its natural moisture content.
The powerful biocides in ZORF are highly effective against many other harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and
micro-organisms including Weils disease (caused by rats).
Directions for Use
Wash hands before and after handling suspect livestock as well as washing hands.
Wet hands. Apply ZORF to hands and forearms, paying attention to thumbs, between the fingers and around nails.
Work into the hands for approximately 30 seconds. Rinse hands with clean water and dry.
